2006 AFTFL Virginia Beach NIT
2006 AFTFL Virginia Beach NIT
The AFTFL National Championships in Virginia Beach, VA would provide the Devils with an opportunity to face a variety of new opponents. After defeating Unknown Talent (Gaithersburg, MD) 16-8 in the opening round on Saturday, the Devils caught fire against Showtime (Fort Monroe, VA) in a 32-0 win. Going into Sunday as the #1 seed the Devils were matched up against a familiar opponent, the DC Jets (Washington, DC). The game played out just as we expected as it went back and forth in a defensive battle. The Devils special teams proved to be the difference as the extra point kick by Jake Stewart gave us a 7-6 victory. In the championship game the Devils met up with Brothers AC (Washington, DC), the 2004 USFTL National Champions. The Devils scored quickly as Seth Steiner intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. The Brothers AC offense went on to score 21 unanswered points whereas the Devils offense was not consistent enough to put together another drive until late in the game. Down 21-14 with under 2 minutes remaining, the Devils managed to drive down the field and into scoring range. With 6 seconds left, AJ Saul scrambled out of the pocket and found Seth Steiner in the back of the endzone for what appreared to be the tying touchdown, but the referee called him out of bounds and ended the Devils hope for another tournament title.
