After
much debate regarding the seeding of the tournament, the Devils
were matched up with the OSU Raiders (Columbus, OH), the defending
USFTL National Champions in the opening round. The Devils traded
scores with the Raiders early as QB A.J.
Saul connected with WR T.J.
Parker on a long score, but a stop by the Raiders defense
inside their own five yard line just before halftime and an
interception return for a score on a conversion attempt for
two points proved to be the difference as the Raiders pulled
out the win, 22-19.
The
opening round loss knocked the Devils into the losers bracket
and would require them to win five games to make it to the
championship game. In the opening round of the losers bracket,
the Devils defense proved to be the difference against Windy
City Fusion (Chicago, IL) in a 13-0 shutout victory. They would
then meet up with an old rival early Sunday morning as they
were matched up with the Jaguars (Baltimore, MD). After many
close games against the Jags in the "C"
and "B" divisions, this game proved to be no different
as the Devils offense could not capitalize on two interceptions
by Jason Hagerty and were
held scoreless on three drives inside the Jags 10 yard line.
After finally taking the lead 13-7 on a TD reception by Hagerty,
the Devils defense gave up a long score with under a minute remaining
as the Jags tied the game at 13. The Devils defense came up big
when it counted most and prevented the conversion to force overtime.
The Devils were able to finally pull out the victory in OT with
a final score of 20-13. In
the next round, the Devils defense once again proved to be the
difference as they defeated Da Jerks (Detroit, MI) 7-0.
In
the semi-finals of the losers bracket, the Devils were able
to make quick work of the Buccaneers (Buffalo, NY) with a 20-6
victory. After a one-point loss in the winners bracket championship
to the Bruins (Detroit, MI), the OSU Raiders were knocked into
the losers bracket and met up with the Devils in a rematch
of the opening round of the tournament. This game proved to
be very different from the first as the Devils were on a roll
from their three wins earlier in the day. The Devils defense
played their best game of the tournament as they were able
to hold the Raiders' high-scoring offense to only one score.
Saul led
the offense to three scores in a 21-7 victory to advance to
the championship game.
The
Bruins were well-rested and ready to defend their home turf
against a Devils team that was playing their fifth game of
the day and seventh of the tournament. However, the Devils
offense was able to score first as Saul connected
with Hagerty on a long
touchdown pass to put them ahead 6-0. The Bruins answered quickly
as they drove down the field to take the lead 8-6 after a TD
and 2 point conversion kick. Two straight interceptions by
the Bruins defense and costly missed flags by the Devils put
the game out of reach as the Devils ran out of gas in a 28-6
loss.
