In
the opening round the Devils were once again matched up with
All-Stars/Redzone (Cleveland, OH), which is a combination of
the two teams that the Devils have played numerous times over
the past few seasons. The Devils scored first and Jake
Stewart added the extra point to make the score 8-0. The
score would stay that way much of the game until Devils' quarterback AJ
Saul's pass was tipped, intercepted and returned for a
touchdown. The extra point failed, which proved to be the difference
in an 8-6 victory for the Devils.
The
Devils would then meet up with another familiar opponent in
the next round as they were matched up the Raiders (Columbus,
OH), who are the defending national champions. Defensive captain Elliott
Giles made some key adjustments against the Raiders spread
offense which proved to be very successful throughout the game.
The Devils scored first and Stewart added
the extra point to go ahead 8-0, but the Raiders would answer
quickly as they scored a long TD on a blown coverage on 4th
and long. The extra point was no good and the Devils kept a
close 8-6 lead. After several defensive stops by the Devils,
the Raiders got the ball back late in the game looking to take
the lead, but Seth Steiner intercepted
a pitch by one of the Raiders receivers and the Devils offense
was able to run out the clock and seal the victory.
The
Devils road to the championship was filled with familiar foes
as they met up with the DC Jets (Washington, DC) in the winners-bracket
final four. On the Devils first posession, Saul connected
with TJ Parker on a long completion
that put the Devils inside the Jets 10 yard line. After three
straight incompletions, Saul chose
to go for it instead of kicking the field goal. His decision
paid off as he connected with Steiner for
the score. Stewart's extra
point was blocked to make the score 6-0. The Jets responded
quickly as they were able to get the ball deep inside Devils
territory in one play. The Devils defense stood strong, but
couldn't hold as the Jets were able to punch it in for the
score and take an 8-6 lead. The Devils were able to respond
as Saul connected with Craig
Villwock in the open field, who then made a great play
as he pitched the ball to Hagerty who
raced down the sidelines for a long score. Hagerty made
another huge play on the Jets next posession as he intercepted
a pass in the back of the endzone to seal the victory as the
Devils moved on with a 17-14 win.
The
winners-bracket championship game proved to be a battle of
defenses as both teams were able to come up with several key
stops. After Dominion's (Upper Marlboro, MD) offense was forced
to punt after three plays, the Devils offense quickly drove
the ball down the field on their opening posession and inside
Dominion's five yard line, but were unable to put any points
on the board. Late in the second half Dominion was able to
put a long drive together and get inside the Devils five yard
line, but Giles came up
with key interception and returned it down the sidelines into
Dominion territory. The Devils offense was once again unable
to put a drive together as Dominion's defensive line was putting
constant pressure on Saul. Dominion
got the ball back with under two minutes left in the game and
began putting together a nice drive. They were able to get
inside the Devils five yard line once again, but could not
punch it in for a score before time expired as regulation ended
in a 0-0 tie. Dominion scored first in overtime to take an
8-0 lead, but the Devils offense quickly answered as Saul connected
with Parker for the score. Stewart added
the PAT to tie the score at 8 and force a second overtime.
Dominion's defense stepped up when it mattered most as they
held the Devils on three consecutive plays and forced a field
goal attempt. Stewart's kick was wide-left and Dominion's offense
took the field and was able to punch it in for the score to
knock the Devils into the losers bracket by the score of 14-8.
The
Devils would now have to defeat Sudden Impact and then double-dip
Dominion twice to take home the title. Due to an injury to
OL Chris Villwock in
the Dominion game, the Devils were forced to switch to a spread
offense against Sudden Impact. The switch proved to be a good
choice as the Devils drove right down the field on their opening
drive as Saul connected with
Hagerty down
the sidelines for the first score of the game. Stewart's extra
point was blocked to make the score 6-0. That would end up
being the Devils only score of the game as Sudden Impact was
able to muster up two scoring drives in a 15-6 victory, eliminating
the Devils from the tournament and ending their title hopes.
Two
members of the Blue Devils were named to the All-American team,
WR Jason hagerty and DB
Poog Williams. |

2007 USFTL Referee's
Cup |
Despite
finishing 2nd in two out of the three USFTL Major NIT's of
2007, the Blue Devils found themselves seeded 14th out of 16
teams in the "A" Division at the Referee's Cup. The
Devils were pleased with their draw despite the low seed being
that their part of the bracket contained talented, but inexperienced
teams that were new to the "A" division.
In
the opening round of the tournament, the Devils were matched
up with True
Playaz (Clinton, MD). QB AJ SAUL led the
offense to the games first touchdown to put the Devils ahead
7-0. The defense took care of the rest as a key interception
by WILL CUPP and constant pressure by the
defensive line kept the True Playaz from getting into scoring
range as the game ended in a Devils victory, 7-0.
The
Devils met up with Aftermath (Chicago,
IL), the 2006 USFTL "B" National Champions in the
next round. Once again, the defense proved to be the difference
as they were able to get their second shutout in as many games
and lead the Devils to the next round with a 22-0 victory.
In
their third game of the day, the Devils finally got a shot
at All
Met (Landover, MD), one of the only "A" teams
in the USFTL the Devils had yet to face. This would be a true
test as All Met has proven that they are amongst the nations
best. SAUL was able to lead the offense down
the field and into scoring range as he connected with WR JASON
HAGERTY for the games first touchdown. JAKE
STEWART tacked on the extra point to put the Devils
up 8-0. All Met scored before half to cut their deficit to
8-6. In the second half, All Met's rush proved to be the difference
as they forced SAUL to make a costly mistake
as an All Met defender stepped in front of a pass for a key
interception in Devils territory. All Met capitalized on the
good field position to take the lead 14-8. The offense had
one more chance in the games final minutes but All Met's rush
proved to be too much as SAUL could not get
the Devils into scoring range and the game ended in a 14-8
victory for All Met.
In
the opening game on Sunday, it looked as if the Devils would
meet up with Sudden
Impact (Chicago, IL) as they led by a touchdown against
True Playaz as time winded down, but a long score on a tipped
pass on the games final play was the difference as True Playaz
eliminated Sudden Impact from the tournament and forced a rematch
of the opening round game. On the games opening play, LB PETE
DAVILA intercepted a True Playaz pass to give the
Devils some much-needed momentum. The defense shutdown the
True Playaz offense once again and led the Devils to another
victory, 11-0.
The
tournament was down to it's final four teams, as the Devils
were matched up with Dominion (Upper
Marlboro, MD). The last time the Devils met up with Dominion
was the 2005 USFTL National Championships, and the Devils prevailed
8-0. This game proved to be much different than the first as
the Devils offense was unable to get anything going from the
beginning and the Devils defense made costly mistakes and missed
flags that led to big plays for Dominion in a disappointing
28-0 loss. |

2007 MCFFU
Eastern Nationals |
The
Blue Devils went into the MCFFU Eastern Nationals with one
goal in mind, and that was to get back to their winning ways.
The theme so far for 2007 has been a loss in the opening
round of the tournament and climbing all the way back through
the losers bracket only to run out of gas in the championship
game. The Devils have finished runner-up at their first two
major tournaments in 2007 with their last tournament title
dating back to November of 2006 at the Michigan State Championships.
The
opening round game against Elite (Washington, DC) set the
tone for the tournament as the Devils got off to a quick
start and jumped ahead 14-0. A late touchdown by Elite made
the score 14-8, but the Devils defense clamped down and shut
down Elite's offense to prevent any attempt of a comeback.
In
the second game of the day, the Devils met up with the tournaments
#1 seed, Yung Crew (Atlanta, GA). Yung Crew's talented group
of receivers were able to make big plays throughout the game
including a long score before halftime to make the score
14-8. AJ SAUL led the Devils on three scoring
drives, one of them in the closing minutes of the game as
he connected with MIKE WRIGHT, a key pickup
from the DC Jets (Washington, DC), for a touchdown to put
the Devils ahead 22-20. A deflection in the back of the endzone
by DB ELLIOTT GILES as time expired sealed
the victory and advanced the Devils to the next round.
The
two wins on Saturday put the Devils in the winners bracket
championship game against the DC Dolphins (Washington, DC)
on Sunday afternoon. The game was heated from the opening
whistle as both teams came out playing instense and physical
football. The DC Dolphins were able to score first to go
ahead 6-0, but the Devils quickly returned the favor as SAUL was
able to find DUPREE LAWRENCE, also from
the DC Jets, streaking down the sidelines behind the Dolphins
secondary for a long score. SAUL marched
the offense right down the field just before halftime as
he found WR JASON HAGERTY in the back of
the endzone for a score, but a holding penalty took away
the touchdown and forced the Devils to attempt a long field
goal. JAKE STEWART'S kick looked good from
all angles, but the official signaled no-good and the Devils
went into halftime ahead only 8-6. The Devils were able to
score first in the second half as STEWART kicked
a field goal to make the score 11-6. The Dolphins scored
late to take the lead 12-11, forcing the Devils offense to
move quickly as time winded down. The offensive line of SCOTT
MURRAY, JUSTIN EVERETT and WRIGHT gave SAUL plenty
of time as he was able to once again put the offense into
scoring range. A QB sneak by SAUL that appeared
to be an obvious touchdown in the final seconds was waved
off as the officials took away another Devils score on a
controversial call and spotted the ball just shy of the goal
line. The Devils were forced to kick a field goal as time
expired and this time there was no question as to whether
the kick was good as STEWART was perfect
and the Devils moved onto the championship game with a 14-12
victory.
The
championship game was a rematch with Yung Crew as they were
able to work their way through the losers bracket with wins
over the Philly Road Warriors (Philadelphia, PA), Pfuzion
(Atlanta, GA), and the DC Dolphins. SAUL scored
the first touchdown on a long run to put the Devils ahead
8-0. After a defensive stop, another long run by SAUL and
a behind-the-back lateral to JOHN BURD took
the Devils inside Yung Crew's 5-yard line. MURRAY then
rumbled in on a direct-snap for the second touchdown making
the score 16-0. A long touchdown reception by a Yung Crew
receiver just before halftime made the score 16-8. Rushers SHAWN
BARBER, JESSE HARDIN, and JEFF
KOVAL put constant pressure on Yung Crew's QB, forcing
him to make quick reads and bad throws throughout the game. SAUL found
WR TJ PARKER for a late score to give the
Devils a 22-6 advantage and put the game out of reach. DB DOM
BOWELL shutdown Yung Crew's talented receivers in
the championship game, earning him Defensive MVP of the tournament. SAUL was
name Offensive MVP and STEWART was awarded
Special Teams MVP.
By
winning the MCFFU Eastern Nationals, the Devils earned a
paid bid and the #1 seed at the Flag Football World Championships
(flagfootballwc.com)
in Dallas, TX in March of 2008.

USFTL Motor City Cup |
After much
debate regarding the seeding of the tournament, the Devils
were matched up with the OSU Raiders (Columbus, OH), the defending
USFTL National Champions in the opening round. The Devils traded
scores with the Raiders early as QB A.J.
Saul connected with WR T.J.
Parker on a long score, but a stop by the Raiders defense
inside their own five yard line just before halftime and an
interception return for a score on a conversion attempt for
two points proved to be the difference as the Raiders pulled
out the win, 22-19.
The opening
round loss knocked the Devils into the losers bracket and would
require them to win five games to make it to the championship
game. In the opening round of the losers bracket, the Devils
defense proved to be the difference against Windy City Fusion
(Chicago, IL) in a 13-0 shutout victory. They would then meet
up with an old rival early Sunday morning as they were matched
up with the Jaguars (Baltimore, MD). After many close games
against the Jags in the "C"
and "B" divisions, this game proved to be no different
as the Devils offense could not capitalize on two interceptions
by Jason Hagerty and were
held scoreless on three drives inside the Jags 10 yard line.
After finally taking the lead 13-7 on a TD reception by Hagerty,
the Devils defense gave up a long score with under a minute remaining
as the Jags tied the game at 13. The Devils defense came up big
when it counted most and prevented the conversion to force overtime.
The Devils were able to finally pull out the victory in OT with
a final score of 20-13. In the next round, the Devils defense
once again proved to be the difference as they defeated Da Jerks
(Detroit, MI) 7-0.
In the semi-finals
of the losers bracket, the Devils were able to make quick work
of the Buccaneers (Buffalo, NY) with a 20-6 victory. After
a one-point loss in the winners bracket championship to the
Bruins (Detroit, MI), the OSU Raiders were knocked into the
losers bracket and met up with the Devils in a rematch of the
opening round of the tournament. This game proved to be very
different from the first as the Devils were on a roll from
their three wins earlier in the day. The Devils defense played
their best game of the tournament as they were able to hold
the Raiders' high-scoring offense to only one score. Saul led
the offense to three scores in a 21-7 victory to advance to
the championship game.
The Bruins
were well-rested and ready to defend their home turf against
a Devils team that was playing their fifth game of the day
and seventh of the tournament. However, the Devils offense
was able to score first as Saul connected
with Hagerty on a long
touchdown pass to put them ahead 6-0. The Bruins answered quickly
as they drove down the field to take the lead 8-6 after a TD
and 2 point conversion kick. Two straight interceptions by
the Bruins defense and costly missed flags by the Devils put
the game out of reach as the Devils ran out of gas in a 28-6
loss.

USFTL Steel City Cup |
For
the fourth year in a row the Blue Devils finished in second
place at the Pittsburgh Major NIT. The Devils fought
hard all tournament to reach the championship game after losing
their first round game against national powerhouse Young Guns
22-20. The game had an amazing finish as the Devils recovered
an onside kick as Shawn Barber made
a great flag pull on the Young Guns kick returner just shy
of the 20 yard line. Devils quarterback AJ
Saul then connected with WR CJ Lawson in the final seconds
to draw the Devils to within two, but the two-point attempt
was no good and the Guns hung on to win. Working their
way through the losers bracket would not be easy, but the Devils
were able to accomplish the feat particularly because of an
amazing effort by their offensive line. The line consisted
of Justin Everett, Scott
Murray, and Brandon Augustini. They
created plenty of time for Saul to find his
talented core of receivers and the Devils were able to pull
past the DC Vikings, Cleveland All-Stars and Red Zone to make
it to the championship game. However, in the championship
the Devils would have to twice defeat a very talented DC Jets. In
the first game, the Devils were able to overcome fatigue to
defeat the DC Jets thanks to some clutch two-point kicks by
Jake Stewart and a total all around show of heart and determination
by the Devils. The “IF” game, however, was
all DC Jets as the fresher legs were able to control the game
and take home the championship. Next up for the Devils
is the USFTL Metro Cup in May, followed by the YFFA league
championships and the YFFA 4man Cash tournament in June. |

USFTL Nationals |
The Blue Devils went into the 2006 USFTL Nationals with high
expectations after finishing 4th at last years tournament in
their first year in the "A" division. But repeating
last years performance would be difficult as the Devils were
paired up with the DC Jets (Washington, DC) in the opening
round. The DC Jets jumped ahead early as a long kickoff return
gave their offense great field position. The Jets took full
advantage as they scored on their first offensive play to take
an 8-0 lead. The Devils offense quickly returned the favor
and drove the length of the field as A.J.
Saul connected with T.J.
Parker for the score to tie the game at 8. The Devils offense
had the ball late in the opening half down 14-8 hoping to take
the lead but a costly interception for a touchdown put the Jets
ahead for good and knocked the Devils into the losers bracket.
The Devils were able to regroup
and get their game back on track early Saturday morning as
they defeated the Wolfpac (Atlanta, GA) 24-0. In the next
round the Devils would meet up with the Hitmen (New Orleans,
LA). The Devils defense was able to control the Hitmen's
spread offense for much of the first half. The Hitmen were
finally able to get inside the Devils redzone just before
halftime but an interception by Poog Williams
should have put a stop to the Hitmen's chances of taking a
lead going into halftime, but a very costly inadvertant whistle
by the referee took away the interception and gave the Hitmen
another chance to take the lead... and that's just what they
did. Saul
was able to lead two second-half scoring drives for the Devils
to put them ahead 14-8 late in the game. A late score by the
Hitmen and a successful 1-point conversion attempt put them
ahead 15-14 with under 1 minute remaining in the game. Saul
connected with Williams
on a long pass down the sideline to give the Devils one last
chance to win the game with a long field goal, but the attempt
was no good as the Devils suffered their second loss and were
eliminated from the tournament.

Michigan State Championships |
| The
Devils traveled to Michigan with one goal in mind, to be crowned
state champions of both 4man and 8man. In the 8man tournament
on Saturday the Devils came out firing on all cylinders as they
dominated their first opponent 32-0. The Devils next two opponents,
RC Sports and Downriver Raiders proved to be more of a challenge.
Turnovers and missed opportunities kept the games close but wasn't
enough to upset the Devils as they moved on to the winners bracket
championship game. The next game pitted the Devils with one of
their Ohio rivals, Red Zone. The Devils dominated the game early
as they went up 13-0, but costly mistakes kept Red Zone in the
game as they were able to tie the score at 13 with under a minute
remaining. A.J. Saul drove
the Devils offense down the field and into field goal range.
With 6 seconds remaining Jake
Stewart kicked yet another game winning field goal to preserve
the Devils victory and move them into the championship game.
The Devils met up with Red Zone once again but this time the
Devils played mistake-free as they took home the Michigan State
Title with a 19-3 victory. |

USFTL Willoughby NIT |
| After
a strong showing on Saturday, defeating the Stone Cold Players and
the Avenue Titans, Sunday's games proved to be a whole different
story. After a slow start offensively, C.O. took full advantage
in the 21-0 loss, sending us into the losers bracket. Big plays
proved to be the difference against United. After a long scoring
drive by our offense, United scored quickly on their first play
from scrimmage to even the score. An interception and a 4th down
miscue resulted in a turnover late in the game, which proved very
costly as United drove down the field to take the lead, 13-12. Our
offense had one last chance with 27 seconds left, but we failed
to capitalize on good field position as time ran out. |

USFTL Steel City Cup |
| PITTSBURGH,
PA - In our first tournament in the "A" division, we
proved we are capable of competing with the top teams in the country.
We started off the tournament on fire, defeating H.U.H. of Washington
DC by a score of 38-0. The next game proved to be much more of
a challange, facing the OSU Raiders of Columbus, OH. Our defense
did an excellent job making the right adjustments to cover their
spread offense, holding them to only 14 points and creating a
crucial turnover late in the game to preserve the win. In the
winners bracket final, we met up with the Young Guns of Beltsville,
MD. Their defense played extremely well and proved to be the difference
in a 14-0 victory, knocking us into the losers bracket. In the
losers bracket final, we met up with the DC Jets, who worked their
way up through the losers bracket after losing their first game
of the tournament to Players Inc. of Chicago, IL. We jumped on
top early 16-0 with two long scores. The DC Jets made a great
attempt at a comeback only to fall short 16-12. The championship
game against the Young Guns proved to be very similar to our last
meeting. After driving the length of the field on our first posession,
the Young Guns defense stepped it up when it counted, keeping
us scoreless after a field goal attempt sailed wide right. Their
offense was very consistent, scoring on three of their four possessions,
leading them to a 20-0 victory. |

USFTL Lake County NIT |
| CLEVELAND,
OH - After a three month layoff since winning USFTL Nationals, we
found ourselves trying to find our groove and get back to the level
we were playing at a few months back. After a 26-22 win over Mick's
Pub & Grille, we met up with the Avenue Titans. This game proved
to be much of what we expected. A back and forth battle where special
teams proved to be the difference in a 16-14 victory. In the winners
bracket final we matched up with Red Zone/Public House, whom we
defeated in the championship game at Nationals this past January.
Two long scores by Red Zone's offense put the game out of reach,
knocking us into the losers bracket in a 24-14 loss. After defeating
the Falcons 21-12, we met up with Red Zone/Public House once again,
which makes it the 4th time in consecutive tournaments. Red Zone/Public
House's defensive line disrupted our offense throughout the game,
giving them a 14-0 shutout victory. |

USFTL Nationals |
| ORLANDO,
FL - After a dissapointing loss in the championship game at last
years USFTL Nationals, we had only one goal in mind this year,
which was to bring home a national title, and that's just what
we did.
In
the opening day of the tournament, we won three crucial games,
including a 4OT victory over Red Zone/Public House (Cleveland,
OH), to set the tone for the tournament. Day two of the tournament
proved to be a challenge, as 3 Brothers (Baltimore, MD) gave us
all we could handle. They scored with just over a minute remaining
in the game to take a 15-14 lead, but they left us with just enough
time to drive down the field to get into field goal range. With
3 seconds left on the clock, Jason Moore kicked a 45 yard field
goal to win the game and carry us to the next round. On the final
day of the tournament, we came out on fire, defeating C.O. (Columbus,
OH) 23-6 in the winners bracket championship game.
In
the championship game, we found ourselves matched up with a familiar
opponent, Red Zone/Public House, who worked their way back through
the losers bracket. On the first play of the game, QB A.J. Saul
was injured after taking a hit to the ribs. Nick Leiter then took
over, leading our offense right down the field, connecting on
a 50 yard pass to WR Jason Hagerty, and putting us into scoring
position. A.J. came back into the game minutes later, and finished
with 3 passing TD's. It was our defense that stepped it up when
it counted most, holding Red Zone/Public house on a crucial 4th
down conversion to seal the game with a 20-19 victory and give
us our first national title. |

USFTL Referee's NIT |
| CLEVELAND,
OH - After winning our first two games of the tournament over Deep
Impact and the Jaguars, we fell short against the Sharks by a score
of 14-8. We had a chance to tie the game in the final minutes, but
a late interception sealed the victory for the Sharks and sent us
to the losers bracket. On Sunday, we came out hot, defeating the
MD Titans 30-16 and Eastside Chiropractic 19-0. Our third game of
the day, against C.O. proved to be a bit more of a challenge. A
late score by C.O. tied the score at 22. They chose to kick for
the 2pt. conversion and the win, but Steve Durbin broke through
and blocked the kick to send the game into overtime. After a great
defensive stand, stopping C.O. on four consecutive plays, our offense
took control with QB A.J. Saul finding Jason Hagerty for the go
ahead touchdown and the win. In the semi-finals, we met up with
the Sharks once again. This game proved to be much like the first
one, with our defense having trouble stopping the Sharks offense.
Down 17-16 late in the game, our offense stalled inside the Sharks
30 yard line. Jake Stewart came on for a field goal attempt of around
45 yards to take the lead, but the field goal was wide left. The
Sharks took over possession and ran the clock out for the victory. |

We finished the tournament with an overall record of 7-2, losing
in the championship to the Titans of Cleveland, OH by the score
of 14-6. Washed Up of Detroit, MI knocked us into the losers bracket
in our third game. We had a chance to win with a last second field
goal, but Washed Up's D-line broke through and blocked it to seal
their victory. We then won five straight games to make it to the
championship against the undefeated Titans. The Titans struck first
with a deep TD pass. We quickly responded with a 20 yard TD pass
from AJ Saul to Alvin Jennings to tie the score at 6. Late in the
game with the score still tied, we began to fall apart. We committed
three turnovers on our final three possessions. Missed opportunities
on our behalf proved to be the difference in the game. |

USFTL State Tournament |
| COLUMBUS,
OH - The Devils beat Ember's in the championship game 7-6 to win
the 30 team "C" Division at the State of Ohio Championships.
QB AJ Saul scrambled for a 35 yard TD with under a minute remaining
in the game to tie the score at 6. Jake Stewart kicked the PAT to
put the Devils up 7-6. The defense stepped it up when it counted,
stopping Ember's on four consecutive plays on the games final drive
to seal the victory and give the Devils their first State Championship.
